How to Start a Cafe in Zimbabwe
A coffee shop is part hospitality, part retail, part workshop. This is a short, practical checklist for anyone thinking about opening a cafe in Harare or anywhere else in Zimbabwe — written from the perspective of a local specialty roaster.
1. Concept & location
Decide what kind of cafe you're opening: grab-and-go, sit-down brunch, roastery-cafe, or a coffee bar inside another business. The concept drives the size, the equipment and the location. In Harare, foot traffic, parking and neighbouring businesses matter as much as rent.
2. Equipment
At minimum: a commercial espresso machine, a grinder for espresso, a grinder for filter, refrigeration, a sink setup, and brewing tools (V60, batch brewer, French press). We help cafes in Harare choose machines that match their projected volume.
3. Coffee & menu
Choose a roaster you trust and build the drinks list around their beans. Buna Brew supplies wholesale specialty coffee to cafes across Zimbabwe and helps with recipes, dialling in and menu design.
4. Baristas
A good machine and good beans still need a trained person behind the bar. We run barista training in Chinhoyi and on-site in Harare, covering espresso, milk steaming and basic maintenance.
5. Licensing & admin
Register the business, sort food-handling permits with your local authority, and put basic accounting and POS in place before opening day.
